In the 18th and 19th century they were ingenious too when the covered passages in Paris ("les passages couverts") were constructed. Well before the invention of shopping malls, these passages were built to protect pedestrians from inclement weather and muddy, dirty streets. But these weren't just passageways (also called 'galeries.

Jul 2019 • Solo. De Passage is the oldest existing shopping centre in the Netherlands, that runs from the Spuistraat to the Buitenhof, and a third wing that runs to Hofweg. De Passage is a lovely covered arcade of renaissance design, housing mid to high end shopping. The place is not very big, but there's plenty of shops and cafes.

De Passage Shopping Arcade, Hague. De Passage is the oldest covered shopping center in the Netherlands. It is a state monument covered by a glass roof that was restored in 2007 and renewed in 2014. The mall reminds one of other covered malls, e.g., the shopping center of Milan, Italy. It is often referred to as a "hidden gem" of a street.

In December, a friend took us to this open-air passage that had recently opened in the 7th Arrondissement with a focus on food. In an expensive neighborhood, it links rue de Grenelle and rue du Bac and boulevard Raspail.

Passage Choiseul is one of the covered passages of Paris, and is the continuation of Rue de Choiseul. The passage was opened in 1827 and is mentioned in tow novels by author Louis-Ferdinand Céline.
